It's fairly clear looking at this that Vidala's Rig will never be a prime candidate for upgrading, but it's a good illustration of a set that contains both armor and a weapon.
Rings and Amulets cannot be upgraded using these recipes, as there is only one quality state for jewelry (no Normal, Exceptional, or Elite). Only the sliding scale traits, those that change with the character level, will have much utility beyond a certain point. However, the stats, partial set, and full set bonuses remain unchanged among the three quality states, which greatly limits their utility at higher levels. Both have higher level and stat requirements. What is the effect of upgrading them to their Exceptional and Elite counterparts? Exceptional and Elite armor pieces have higher Defense, and Exceptional and Elite weapons have higher Damage. +1-148 Maximum Cold Damage (+1.5/Character Level) This is the set as it drops in game, updated for the changes that will be applied to this set in Patch 2.4:
To test this, we upgraded the Vidala's Rig set, a low-level set meant for bow-wielding Amazons. The recipes clearly state that these retain the same iLevels and properties, but what exactly does change and by how much? Patch 2.4 introduces four new recipes for the Horadric Cube to upgrade Set armor and weapons from Normal to Exceptional, and then from Exceptional to Elite.
